~Stichin' up some lovin' with Papertrey...January Blog Hop~

Saturday, January 25, 2014

Hey, hoppers!  Popping in to share a project I made earlier in the week for Jillian's teacher's birthday! (Perfect for today's hop at Papertrey!)  She loves this gal...and this gal loves owls...and her favorite color is pink!  She is an adult, though...so I used lots of neutrals with little pops of pink in the fabrics and felts I chose for a little pillow (maybe not so little...around a foot wide and an inch or two taller).  My PTI dies (and some Spellbinders)  made it easy and fun!  The Spellbinder and Funky Flower dies were used for the eyes...

The Limitless Layers Heart dies were used just as they are...along with the Heart to Heart flower die...

And the large scallop die was used for layers of  'feathers' on the tummy...

And here's the full feathered friend...

It was a bit of a risky project...at least the way I did it.  I didn't have a pattern so I made one, and stitched it up with scrap fabric.  Wasn't pleased with that shape, and modified the pattern, but didn't re-stitch to check. I just hoped that I had made the necessary changes.  Then everything was sewn onto the front before stitching the two pieces together and stuffing.  That was the risky part.  Stuffing does change the shape...it would have been very disappointing to find out I didn't like the stuffed shape once all that work had been done. All in all, I was pretty pleased, though.  I would probably modify it slightly if I made another, but her teacher was surprised and delighted at a handmade gift, so...it's all good!  I did use a metal shim for the fabric die cutting, but that all went very smoothly and took a lot of work out of the designing.  Hope you like!!!;)

I have a couple other projects I'm hoping to finish and share later...but my family may have other ideas;)

Have fun hopping, and thanks so much for visiting!

  10. Isn't it wonderful using the dies to cut fabric?! It's so much fun to mix, match, and just plain use the dies "the wrong way". This is the first of your sewing I've seen in a long time.

Should I say it? Winter seems to agree with you. Too much snow and cold (always bad in farming country), but it's nice to know that we humans can still be foiled by Mother Nature. Not much seems to get in our busy ways these days. I wish you more blissful creative hours, provided you share your genius. You really are amazing!

  22. You are amazing! This owl is out-of-this-world cleverly and resourcefully created! Doesn't it feel great when you come up with different ways to use your products! Seriously, this wee hoot would likely sell for some big $$$ at craft fairs. Do you craft for craft bazaars? (likely not an option with a young and busy family!)

The detail in this project is amazing! From the wee scallops around his eyes to the different fabrics on his ruffles! A beautiful blend of vintage & country charm!

    Your sewing ROCKS...absolutely perfect!
